The Centers for Disease Control Prevention has laid down specific rules and guidelines to help restaurant owners educate their staff and keep everyone safe.
There are three major categories to measure the risk of going to restaurants. Low risk restaurants focus on drive through, delivery, take-out, and curbside pick up. Restaurants with indoor and outdoor seating in addition to limited capacity and tables six feet part are considered to be medium risk. Restaurants that are high risk have indoor and outdoor seating while the capacity is not reduced and tables are not spaced six feet apart.
So, how do you know what restaurants are doing to keep you safe? Here’s what to look for:
1. Hand Hygiene
As a customer, you want to make sure all employees are required to wash their hands frequently. Some restaurants prefer that employees wear gloves as an extra precaution. Another aspect to consider is if the restaurants are providing hand sanitizer for all customers near entrances, exits, and other convenient areas.
2. Face Coverings
Face covers are proven to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. Restaurant employees are required to wear a cloth mask or face shield to protect themselves and customers. Customers also should be required to wear their face coverings when they are not seated at a table to protect others. Some restaurants are providing face masks for customers that forget theirs or have broken them. They are also responsible for providing masks and shields for employees while they are working.
3. Cleaning and Disinfecting
Cleaning routines have completely changed for restaurants due to the pandemic. High touched surfaced are frequently disinfected, and employees have more access to adequate cleaning equipment. Some restaurants have created a cleaning schedule which causes them to close and clean the entire restaurant and then reopen. Other restaurants have a system to clean before the next guest is seated.
4. A decrease in the amount of shared objects
Restaurants have started using technology to keep customers safe. Digital menus are new to many restaurants, and they are proving to be successful. Some restaurants have the entire menu on the website for customers to look at on their phone. Another option is to have a code for customers to scan and see the specials. The touch less payment option has become more popular as well to keep customers safe.
5. Modified Layouts
Social distancing is one of the best ways to keep people safe from contracting COVID-19. Many restaurants have changed their layouts to ensure all customers are at least six feet apart. Restaurants have also limited their seating capacity due to social distancing. To help restaurants with limited capacity, they have created better reservations systems and a time limit for customers seated at tables.
